10 Must Have 4WD Accessories To Get Your Rig Adventure Ready
Overview
Meet Dan.
Dan Everett has spent the better part of his working life plying his trade as a tech guru for every major 4x4 magazine and show in the country. From the best places in top end to lift a wheel, to bush mechanic fixes like replacing your suspension with a ratchet strap to get out of the desert, he’s the go-to-guy for all pinion gear-related laughs.
Dan takes us through his top 10 must have 4x4 gear.
Ridge Ryder 224mm LED Driving Lights
There’s an old saying: “Never outdrive your headlights”. In other words, if you can only see three seconds in front of you before your lights fade out, but it’ll take you three seconds to hit the brakes to come to a complete stop, you’ll be constantly scanning the road at the limit of your vision.
Ridge Ryder 224mm LED driving lights give you significantly more sight distance in the dark, meaning you’ll have far more time to react and less stress behind the wheel. They also come with wiring harnesses and all the mounts you’ll need to fit them to your rig.
Oricom 2W Handheld UHF Radio
Whether you’re looking to keep the tin lids occupied playing with Mum and Dad’s walkie talkies or you need a serious means of communication for back-country safety and comms in your convoy, a UHF ticks all the boxes. The range of Oricom handheld units are low-cost and lightweight, making them perfect for slipping in a pocket or clipping to a kid’s bike.
If you’re after a little more punch, then consider stepping up to a vehicle-mounted unit offering 5W of grunt. Different radio channels are dedicated to different tasks, so make sure you’re familiar with what channels are good to use in your neck of the woods.
PRO TIP:
Remember that UHF is open airwaves. Before transmitting think about what you are going to say. Keep to the point, and be easily understood. Anybody can listen or join in on any channel – so never transmit your personal affairs or footy tips!
Ridge Ryder low profile tub rack
From mountain bikes to solar panels, there’s a lot of adventure kit that just won’t fit inside your rig. You know the back seat is no place for a freshly muddied set of recovery boards. Leave the box trailer at home and opt for some external storage solutions like the Ridge Ryder low profile tub rack. Platforms like these are the perfect place to carry bulky kit like swags, rooftop tents, jerry cans or even kayaks — without eating into your tub space. Roof racks, cages or baskets are another alternative. For any storage alternative, keep an eye on your load limits to keep things legal.
XTM 7 Piece 4WD Recovery Kit
If you find yourself bogged to the hilt out past the black stump, forget the Insta selfie and reach for the recovery kit. There are very few situations you’ll find yourself in that this simple accessory can’t get you out of — as long as you’ve got a second 4WD or a winch along for the ride. The XTM 7 piece 4WD recovery kit is loaded with a snatch strap for getting yanked out by a mate, plus winch extension strap and tree-trunk protector for self-extraction with a 12V winch. You’ll be back on solid ground in no time.
Any recovery situation will come with a heightened risk, so ensure you’re using load-rated kit, rated recovery points (your hitch receiver will do in a pinch, but NEVER the tow-ball itself) and keep people well clear of the scene.
XTM 12V Air Compressor 160LPM
Deflating your tyres off-road from road pressures down will make the tyre “bag out” and give you a larger contact patch and more traction as a result. Decrease pressure slowly and adjust as needed. When you’re back on solid ground or bitumen, you’ll need a quick and easy solution such as a portable air compressor. Enter the XTM 12V air compressor. Capable of pushing out 160 litres per minute, this little unit makes light work of pumping your tyres back up to road pressure, but also doubles up for air beds, the footy or your bike tyres. A 12V compressor is a handy bit of gear with multiple uses. An XTM deflator tyre gauge will help you find the right pressure.
Recovery Tracks
There are 1000 different ways you can get stuck off-road — and 1001 different ways of getting yourself out. A set of traction or recovery boards are involved in most of these great escapes. In their basic form, you can use the boards as a ramp with bulk traction to get you up and out of sand or a mud hole. But you can also use them as a ramp up ledges, a bridge across ruts, or even to level out your rig if you’re camped on uneven terrain.
Most recovery boards have a built-in shovel at either end, to help remove debris or earth. You’ll be out of that sand or mud hole in no time.
PRO TIP:
Be warned, though, if you spin your tyres on the boards, the plastic lugs will sacrifice themselves rather than shredding your tyres. So tread lightly or you’ll be up for a second set quick smart.
XTM 2m x 2.5m Awning
A roll-out awning screams “weekends away” for a reason. The XTM 2m x 2.5m awning will give you ample protection from the sun in summer with a UPF 50+ sun rating protection. It will also keep the dew off your camping set-up, making for quicker pack-ups in the morning. But nature has a way of fighting back, so make sure you throw on the guy ropes and peg it down in case of any wayward gusts of wind.
This model awning can be easily mounted to most roof rack systems making it ideal for the kids next sporting event, weekend camping or a lazy afternoon at the beach.
Ridge Ryder 4WD Drawer & Stainless Steel Slide
There’s nothing better than a sausage in a fresh roll. That is, until you find the rolls have been squished into pancakes under the kids’ feet. If this is you, consider a drawer system. The ultimate solution for easy access to a firmly packed adventure machine, these cleverly designed units are way more than boxes to put your stuff in. They’ve got slides to mount your fridge and they also provide a little extra bench space.
Stash the heavy gear you don’t need too often deep into the drawer, and the lighter stuff up towards the front. It’ll get old quick having to move your spare diff centre just to get to your chips, but when packed right, this drawer will change your whole camping experience.
The Ridge Ryder 4WD Drawer includes:
- Stainless steel cutting board
- Heavy-duty stainless runners
- Aluminium edge protection
- Hard wearing carpet in and out
- Steel frame and modular design
XTM 12L 12V Fridge
Even the best camp meal is only as good as its ingredients. Leave the dehydrated meats at home and opt for a camp fridge instead. Available in compact, affordable units for quick overnight jaunts or larger fridge-freezers for extended trips.
We’ve ticked the box for the middle ground with the XTM 12L fridge, which stows more than enough for a weekend on the tracks. Capable of knocking the temps down to -12C, while being readily portable thanks to its light weight and included carry straps, the 12L is everything you need for campsite success. It does take time for any camp fridge to cool things down though, so give it a head start by loading it with pre-chilled drinks and food.
Ridge Ryder Butane Stove with Double Burner Steel Plate
Evolve your camp site from caveman to cuisine with the handy Ridge Ryder double- burner butane stove. This offering is the perfect tool for cooking up a storm right by the side of the track. Run on affordable butane gas canisters, this stove is super-portable. It can be used to cook up an epic feed for an army of mates, while the included hot plate makes it simple enough to knock together an easy meal for two. Just add some snags, mushrooms, a little chili and some onions to dine like royalty, no matter where you park up for the night.
Tips
PRO TIP: Don’t forget the first aid kit.
It wouldn’t be an adventure if you didn’t push the limits at least a little. That means some stripped bark or a grazed knee is almost inevitable. You’ve kitted your rig out with gear in case things turn to strife in the machine department, so it makes sense to do the same with you or a loved one.
A basic first aid kit should come with assorted bandages, band-aids, tweezers and plenty of antiseptic to sanitise any scrapes or cuts. This Trafalgar unit has a fantastic guide on all the kit inside and how to use it. But do yourself a favour and get first aid-qualified as well. You never know whose butt you’ll save with a little emergency care knowledge.
