Beginner’s Guide To Throttle Controllers
Overview
What is a throttle controller?
A throttle controller is a small plug and play device which modifies the throttle response on vehicles with electronically controlled or ‘drive by wire’ accelerator pedals. The driver can set the throttle controller for quickest throttle response to achieve faster acceleration, slowest throttle response for maximum fuel efficiency; or typically wherever the driver finds a happy medium between these two.
Why are throttle controllers important?
So what do throttle controllers do? When your car leaves the factory floor, throttle response is set at a perfect middle ground for the widest range of drivers. The daily driver won’t find it too jerky, spirited driving won’t be too laggy, and fuel economy will find a happy middle ground. A throttle controller puts that control at YOUR fingertips. Set it for maximum responsiveness and rather than the factory tuned gradual acceleration; you’ll get everything she’s got straight to the wheels. When you want smoother driving, you can turn the response down. For anyone who wants more control of their driving, a throttle controller is a must.
How does a throttle controller work?
A throttle controller works by intercepting and modifying the electronic signal from your throttle pedal. To achieve this you unplug the wire from your accelerator pedal, fit the piggyback adaptor, and plug the wire back into this. For an evc throttle controller, it will operate in automatic mode straight away. From here you can switch to ULTIMATE mode for best throttle response, or ECONOMY mode each with 9 user selectable levels. You can also select factory mode to instantly restore the factory throttle response.
Throttle controller pros and cons
Benefits of a throttle controller
Let’s begin with installation. The simple plug and play method is easily achievable at home and is much cheaper than ECU tuning. When your throttle controller is set for increased throttle response, you’ll have better acceleration and faster 0-100km/h times. If better fuel efficiency is what you’re after, you’ll certainly see some gains using the economy mode. And of course a throttle sensitivity can be set on the fly. Towing a horse float? Decrease the throttle response to smooth out the ride. Or set it just right for minimal wheel spin and loss of traction off road.
Limitations of a throttle controller
There really aren’t too many drawbacks to fitting a throttle controller. However, on high throttle response settings, some people report that the throttle is already at maximum with the pedal only half pressed. This of course can be avoided by simply turning down the sensitivity a little. The only other limitation is that sadly throttle controllers are not available to suit all vehicles, even if they do have an electronically controlled throttle.
How to choose the right throttle controller?
Choosing the right throttle controller really is SUPER simple because each unit is programmed to suit a set vehicle make and model. Just enter your rego on the Supercheap Auto website, select your vehicle and search ‘throttle controller’ and if one is available to suit your vehicle; it will be displayed straight up.
Avoid purchasing a cheap, no name throttle controller. These have been known to cause more problems than they fix, even coming down to safety issues. Go for a brand name such as the evc throttle controller.
If you have a higher budget, you can purchase a Bluetooth enabled model and use your phone to change throttle settings. Beyond this, most throttle controllers perform the same basic functions albeit in slightly different ways.
Materials & Tools
For your Throttle Controller installation, you’ll require the following parts and tools

Steps
Choose your throttle controller
After deciding on the features you’d like in a throttle controller and the brand you’ll choose; make sure that you’re selecting the right model for your vehicle. Enter your rego in the Supercheap Auto “My Garage” feature and you’ll be shown the correct one automatically.
Mount your throttle controller
Find a suitable location on the dash where you can readily see and operate the throttle controller while driving, without it being ‘in your face’ as the display on some throttle controllers are quite bright at night. Clean the area with an alcohol wipe and stick the controller in place with the included double-sided tape.

Connect your throttle controller
Route the cable from your throttle controller down towards the accelerator pedal, using cable ties where necessary as you go. Disconnect the plug at the accelerator pedal and poke that into the piggyback connector on your throttle controller. Then plug the other end of that piggyback connector into the accelerator pedal.

Transmission setting
I know you’re SUPER excited to take it for a spin, but first you need to set auto or manual transmission. Refer to the instructions supplied with your throttle controller for that; as it will differ between brands.

Tips & FAQs
Are throttle controllers legal in Australia?
Since a throttle controller only changes throttle response and does not modify the power output or emissions of your vehicle; it is widely accepted as a legal modification across Australia. However, laws differ state to state and are frequently subject to change so if you’re unsure; always check with your state transport authority.
Are throttle controllers worth it?
If you’re still wondering “do throttle controllers work?”, ask anyone who owns a throttle controller and we’re certain they will tell you it’s worth the low cost relative to a dyno tune. Most drivers will see a noticeable improvement in the ‘throttle lag’ so prevalent in modern vehicles, and the ability to fine tune your throttle response to suit driving conditions will soon have you wondering how you lived without it.
Do throttle controllers void warranty?
Throttle controllers pose no risk to voiding your warranty in Australia. If you have any doubts, your throttle controller can easily be removed and the vehicle reverts entirely to factory settings with no evidence that anything was ever changed.
Can I install a throttle controller on any type of vehicle?
TFor a vehicle to be suitable for a throttle controller installation, it must first have an electronic ‘drive by wire’ throttle. These were only entering the market in Australia around the early to mid 2000’s. Many vehicles including cars, trucks, four wheel drives, and sports cars can be improved with a throttle controller. However, some vehicles, even if they are fitted with an electronic throttle; cannot be improved with a throttle controller. It is best to check compatibility with your preferred throttle controller manufacturer.
Can I install a throttle controller on my own or do I need professional assistance?
Installing a throttle controller is SUPER easy, the trickiest part is identifying the plug on your accelerator pedal. Once that is plugged in, you just need to select manual or automatic transmission on the controller and you’re ready to go! If you have any doubts along the way, the instructions supplied with your throttle controller will provide all the detail you need.
Professional installation is of course an option if you desire; and because installation is straight forward, this should be relatively affordable.
