How To Polish Chrome and Care for Plastic Trim
Overview
It’s the little touches that make your car look really special and, if you give them that little bit of extra attention, it makes your pride and joy that little bit nicer to look at.
Before You Start
Remember to wash and thoroughly dry your car before polishing or treating it, paying particular attention to removing grime and water spots from the metal, chrome and exterior trim. The surface you’re treating needs to be clean, dry and cool.
NOTE: These tips are for polishing metal, chrome and black plastic trim. Gold plating, anodised, painted or coated metals will need a different product and procedure.
Items
Materials
- Chrome Polish
- Exterior Trim Protectant
- Two Microfibre Cloths
Steps
Polish Metal
Apply a small amount of polish to a soft microfibre cloth.
Gently rub the polish onto the metal surface until a black residue appears, then buff the residue away with a clean microfibre towel before the polish dries. Take it nice and easy, there’s no need for hard rubbing.
Polish Chrome
Apply the chrome polish to a soft microfibre cloth, and then rub it thoroughly onto the chrome surface.
Allow it to dry to a haze before removing from the chrome using a new soft, clean microfibre cloth.
Treating Black Plastic Trim
Shake the trim protectant well, and then apply it to a soft microfibre cloth.
Apply the protectant liberally and massage it into the surface. Allow it to dry, then buff with a clean cloth.
Tips
- Do not use the same polish on chrome, gold plating, anodised, painted or coasted metals as you would use on ordinary metals. Polishing chrome requires a specific type of metal polish, to bring out that brilliant mirror finish.
- Ensure you shake the bottle of chrome polish well, both before and during the job.
- If your chrome or black plastic trim was really rusted, stained or soiled to start with, you might need to repeat the process a couple of times to get the best result.
