How fast do electric cars charge?
There are three speeds of EV charging common to electric and PHEV vehicles. It's important to note that not all vehicles can accept the highest charging levels. However, if a vehicle is compatible with the higher levels, it will always be able to accept the slower charge levels as well.
Speed 1: Trickle Charging
This method may be the slowest tortoise in the race, but as it utilises a standard single phase 240-volt wall outlet; you’re not short of places to charge.
You won’t find many Level 1 public electric vehicle charging stations with level 1 as the only method. At a maximum charge rate of 2.3 kilowatts an hour, you’ll need well over a day to charge an electric vehicle to 80%.
Speed 2: Quick Charging
More common at public EV charging stations. You’ll get 22 kilowatts an hour using this option. If you have three phase power at your home, you can install a 22-kilowatt charger at home. If you’re on single phase, you’re limited to a 7-kilowatt charger, which is still quick enough to charge the average electric vehicle overnight.
In both cases, installation must be completed by an electrician.
Speed 3: SUPER fast charging
This is DC charging, the SUPER fast method! These range from 50 to 350 kilowatts an hour, so you could be fully charged in as little as 15 minutes with a compatible vehicle. DC Charging is not an option for home use and found only on a select number of public EV charging stations.
How to charge an electric or PHEV car
In Australia, electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are found with two common types of charging socket for AC charging.
Public EV charging stations have the relevant charging cords, so you don’t need to travel with your at-home charging cable.
Type 1
This is the least common at public EV charging stations in Australia but is the standard in America. Type 1 connectors can only use speed 1 and 2 charging up to 7 kilowatts. But, nothing to worry about if you are prepared.
Type 2
The most common connector and the one used by Tesla vehicles. This type can utilise level one and two charging up to 22 kilowatts. When purchasing a type 2 charge cable, be sure to consider the kilowatt rating. You’ll save some money if you’re happy with slower charging and choose the 7 kilowatt cable.
If you want to take advantage of 22 kilowatt fast charging, you will require the thicker 3 phase cable.
DC Ultra Fast Connectors
DC ultra-fast charging connectors come in two common types: CHAdeMO and CCS2. CHAdeMO is a DC-only connector primarily used on Japanese vehicles, while CCS2 (combined charging system) combines a type 2 AC socket with a DC ultra-fast socket, covering all EV charging needs.
EV charging from a normal power point
This is simple, but not quite as simple as grabbing any old extension cord lying around the house. You need a cable with an inbuilt charger and the correct type 1 or 2 plug for your vehicle.
This is super handy to keep in the back of the car and charge up at any old power point. Note: you won’t be able to use it at public charging stations
