What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 EV charger cables?

Across Europe, the standard charging cable inlet is Type 2, whereas in Asian, Japanese, and American markets, the dominant variation is the Type 1 inlet.

Type 1 cables feature a 5-pin design with a latch mechanism that secures the plug in place, preventing it from being dislodged from the charger socket. On the other hand, Type 2 cables have a 7-pin design and do not include these latches. Instead, vehicles utilising Type 2 plugs are equipped with a locking pin which effectively locates and secures the plug in place.
