If your 4WD is stuck in a position that you need to double the power of your winch to get out of a tricky situation, try this simple double line winch pull techinque.
What you'll need to perform a double line winch pull:
2 Rated Recovery Points, Winch, Bow Shackles, Equaliser Strap, Winch Dampers, Snatch block and a Winch Extension Straps
Step 1 - Assessment
In this 4wd recovery, Mad Matts Toyota Bundrea came up against a very steep incline and with a massive rock on the left hand side to climb over.
The closest tree that Mad Matt deemed safe enough for this type of recovery was about 20 meters away from the Bundera, Winch extension straps are to be used in this suituation.
With your foot on the brake, turn the engine off, put it in gear and pull the handbrake on tightly to keep the car in a safe position.
First step is to chock the vehicles rear wheels safely, either ask a mate or do this yourself if safe to do so.
Hook up the equaliser strap with 2 bow shackles on your front rated recovery points then pull your winch rope towards a suitable health soild tree.
Make sure your Bow shackles are rated before using.
Step 2 - Secure to Tree
Roll out the winch extension strap or tree protector, wrap around the suitable tree, then unwind any twists or nots. Take both ends of the strap towards your winch rope.
Grab the ends of the winch extension strap and place inside a bow shackle without the bolt. Using a Snatch Block, feed the winch rope through the pulley in a U shape and join the 2 eyes back together. Connect the bow shackle and snatch block together using the bow shackle bolt.
Step 3 - Check Your Connection
Grab the Winch rope and pull tight to make sure all is connected correctly.
Take the Winch rope hook to the front of your vehicle and connect to the equaliser strap.
Make sure you fit air dampers to all ropes and straps to ensure that if something in the recovery should fail, the air damper will help bring the recovery gear to the ground.
Step 4 - Winch Your Vehicle
Clear all bystanders away from the recovery area, double the length of the winch and straps to be sure.
Jump in the car, start the engine and using the winch remote, carefully start to pull the vehicle up.
As we are using a snatch block in this recovery, the speed of the recovery has halfed but the pulling power has doubled.
When winching for long periods of time, make sure to allow the winch to rest. winch for a minute, rest for 5 minutes.
After you're up, make sure to clean up and feed the winch cable back into the winch evenly. Mad Matt has some great tips on how to do this and other recoveries.
